You Got To Have Faith

This morning I shot with a model named Faith. Within two minutes of meeting her we established the fact that she is a US Marine too. She went to boot camp in 2001 right about the time I was heading overseas for the second time. Small world! The shoot went really well and was a lot of fun. Here are some of the results along with a lighting diagram and explanation of what I did.
Canon 5D, Canon 24-105mm f/4 L, ISO100, 1/160sec, f/8.0, 85mm
All of the images in this post are pretty much straight out of the camera. I used Adobe Lightroom 2.3 to do the Camera RAW conversion and adjust the white balance. I used Adobe Photoshop CS3 to remove a few small skin blemishes and add the logo.

I remember when I used to spend a long time in Photoshop for each image… It is much better to get the lighting right so that you don’t have to spend more than a few minutes for each image in post processing. It has made my life so much easier!

The lighting for this shoot is coupled very closely with the lighting that Robert Vanelli used for some of our recent shoots. The lighting diagram below gives the details as to what strobes were used and how they were arranged. I kept the shutter speed at 1/160 seconds to kill the ambient light on the backdrop making it appear black instead of blue. The blue would show through in a few small areas in some of the shots due to one thing or another but it didn’t cause a problem. The small areas that did show up blue gently faded to black to blend in with the rest which helped to add more depth to the images anyway. The snoots on the two back lights were made using a large piece of black poster board which is a $3 alternative to a $150 snoot!!
Note that I was using one of Vanelli’s SB-800′s with my Canon 5D. I set the SB-800 to remote manual mode and then used a sync cord from my camera to the Interfit 550. The light from the Interfit 550 triggered all the other strobes including the SB-800. I had two of my Canon Speedlight 580′s in my bag but I wanted to experiment using the SB-800 with the Canon 5D which is why I kept it in the mix. It worked out really well… I just wish my Canon 5D would talk to the SB-800 directly instead of having to keep it in manual mode and use the light from another strobe to trigger it. One can wish… Next experiment is to use a Canon Speedlight 580 on camera to trigger a bank of SB-800s set to remote manual mode. If that works then I can use my three Canon Speedlight’s with Vanelli’s SB-800s and have 5 or more small flashes that are easily used in the field. That would be sweet!
