Fun with Photography

Last night I decided to take a relaxing night off and hang out with my daughter. We started with a little racing on the XBOX and then sat on the back porch with the fire pit burning, orange juice in our cups, and just talked about whatever random stuff came up. Then I got an idea… what a perfect time to teach her more about photography and have a little fun in the process!

15 second exposure @ ISO 100
There is really nothing spectacular photography wise with the photos in this post. This was a last minute idea with zero preparation and meant only to have a little fun and get my daughter more interested in photography. All I can say is… it worked. She absolutely loved what we were doing and begged me to print out a few of the photos so she could take them to school today and write about them in her daily journal. Mission accomplished!!

Allyson relaxing with her orange juice – 15 second exposure @ ISO 100
The first fun photos we started doing were playing with the ghosting from long exposures. She tried to stand as still as possible while looking scared while I held different scary poses around her for about 10 seconds each. Getting a 9 year old to stand still is like changing the laws of physics… it just isn’t going to happen! But she did a good enough job at it so her image is pretty strong while mine ghosted out well. Again, nothing spectacular photography wise… it was just for fun.

The next thing we did was play with the painting with light technique that I’ve seen a lot of photographers do. I’ve done this a little with sparklers in the past but never with a flash light. Ben Willmore has been doing this a lot lately and I thought it would be fun to try. Well, now I know why Ben has been doing it a lot lately… it is really fun and very challenging to get exactly what you want out of it. I am going to experiment more with this technique in the future with other models to really see what I can do. I have a feeling Ben is going to think I am a poser though… he is the one that got me into HDR and now I am going to follow him again into painting with light. But hey, you know what they say, copying is the highest form of flattery.
25 second exposure @ ISO100 – Mini-Mag flashlight used for highlighting
As you can see in the image above, it is a really cool technique! Imagine using different colors of flashlights to highlight different areas of the composition… like using a red light to highlight the edges of the firepit and torches and maybe green to highlight things in the background. You’d have to move fast to do all that though. And yes… Allyson is doing a disco pose. Why? I don’t know… but she really wanted to do it and I wasn’t going to tell her no. This was all about fun and getting her more interested in photography and that is exactly what we did!

That’s really cool! I’ve seen Ben Willmore explain painting with light, but I’ve never tried it. My kids would really get into that, too.
