Cocoa Beach Pier Part 2

The image below is another HDR created from images I shot under the Cocoa Beach Pier a few days ago. This one was created using 5 images from -2EV to +2EV at a 1EV interval. This was accomplished using manual (M) mode on my Canon 5D and adjusting the shutter speed to capture each one. It is too bad the Canon 5D only lets you shoot 3 images in bracket mode. Shooting 5 bracketed would be so nice!
Anyway, that is the method that I have been using lately instead of shooting 3 images in exposure bracketing mode. I think have the 5 images at 1EV steps gives you more to work with once you’ve merged to HDR. I have played with taking 7 and 9 shots as well but that only seems to increase processing time and file size without returning any quality benefits. So I think the magic number for merging HDR’s, at least in my opinion, is currently 5 images at 1EV steps. The shots that I used to make up this HDR are shown below.
As with the last image, I’ve been masking parts of the original images back into the HDR image to fix blemishes, ghosting, and to give it a slightly more realistic look in the Trey Ratcliff style. All the water and sky in the image above was masked in from two of the originals. The larger sky area on the right side of the image was completely added manually. In the originals there is a lot of boards and support beams in that area that looked really crappy and there was no easy way to fix them. So, I just removed them. All of them. And then created the sky and the water in that area to look like the small areas of sky and water across the image.
The final touches on this one was playing with the drawing with light technique to enhance the backpack, surfboard, and sand a little bit more. I wanted them to be the center of attention but they were a little darker and less vivid than the rest of the image. So I pumped that area up a little and brought down the rest of the image to fix that. I didn’t want to over do it so I stopped where it is now which I think looks pretty good.
