Showing Some Attitude

I finally got tired of borrowing soft boxes and reflectors every time I went out to do a shoot so I broke down and ordered some gear for myself back in April. Nothing too fancy… A photoflex soft box, Westcott 5-in-1 reflector, a light stand for my Canon Speedlight 580 and a stand/boom to hold the reflector. I was itching to try it all out the day it came in so I recruited my daughter to play model for a few minutes so I could snap off a few shots.
The photo above was taken with her looking directly at the Speedlight 580 with the soft box on it. I dialed the power back on it by a little so it wouldn’t blow out the whole scene. If I recall correctly I had the white reflector low to the ground directly under the camera and angle to bounce a little light back up on to the side of her face. I snapped the shot at f/5.6, 1/60, at 44mm.
While working with the photo in Photoshop I had it cropped in tight and really liked the way it looked. So I made a second composition based on the original photo.
The rest of these were taken with the light and reflector in various places. I should have kept track but I didn’t. But these photos show the true personality of my daughter so well.

I love the sophistication and the elegance of the first two, and the natural-ness of the last two. I’m guessing she’s a handful from the expressions. Makes me almost wish I had a desire to do portrait work.

She is a handful at times but for the most part she is an angel. The only things I can really complain about are the exact same things that I did when I was a kid so… irony… sigh!
