MacBook Water!

We all know that being first to market with a new idea is paramount in business as well as releasing a revolutionary new product. Apple recently did this with the MacBook Air; a lightweight laptop that is thin enough to fit into an envelop. Pretty impressive. Not to be out done by the big-A, my wife recently decided to experiment with my MacBook Pro to see if she could get her new idea off the ground; the MacBook Water! Based on the outcome of her experiment I think I am going to rename it to ‘real expensive paper weight’!!
All joking aside, a glass of water slipped out of her hand and hit the edge of the coffee table near my MBP. It was a complete accident. Only a very small amount of water actually splashed on the MBP but it was enough to seep into the case and wreck havok. The computer shut off and wouldn’t turn back on. I followed all the steps on Apple’s website and still nothing. So I took it in to Connecting Point, a certified Apple service center, yesterday morning and amazingly enough they called me this morning to pick it up. Apparently the SMU crashed and needed to be reset. That was it! I did the reset procedure twice before taking it in but apparently the instructions on Apple’s site are wrong. My guess was the either the main board or the power supply was fried. The best part about it is their service was covered under the manufacturers warantee! Whew! I figured my laptop was gone for at least 3 weeks but it came back the next day. Awesome! I was almost desperate enough to pull out my old Vista laptop that I still haven’t sold. Dodged the bullet on that one!
I was very impressed with the service I got from Connecting Point. Anyone in the Central Florida area that needs Apple service and don’t want to drive to Orlando I highly recommend these guys. They are at 1533 N. Harbor City Blvd (US1) in Melbourne.
I’ve been meaning to buy a protective case and an external hard drive to back up my data on for a few months now. Guess what? I just placed my Amazon order for a Speck hard-shell case and a Western Digital 1TB MyBook World Edition hard drive. I like the World Edition series from WD because it is a network storage device… no USB or Firewire. I can set Time Machine up to backup my computer every hour to the drive over the wireless network without having to plug it in directly. So it is much like getting an Apple Time Capsule but for half the price (and without the 802.11N network but honestly… 802.11G is fast enough).
So, a few hints for anyone who is curious…
- MacBook Water is a horrible idea for a new product.
- The instructions on Apple’s website for resetting the SMU only work for certified Apple repair centers.
- If you have a Mac, buy an external hard drive and setup Time Machine to back up your data every hour.
- If you don’t have a Mac, buy one and refer to number 3 above.
- Get some kind of protective case for your laptop. Accidents do happen.
And just in case he is wondering, #4 was added to the list above specifically for my buddy Robert Louis Vanelli.

The Speck case is a good case but for the same amount of money I would suggest the Incase hard shell instead.

I have both cases for my 17inch Macbook Pro and the glossy Speck shell is a scratch magnet and become ugly as time goes on while the Incase has a rubbery matte surface tends to keep its appearance better.
